Pyruvate is the end product of glycolysis. Its further metabolism depends on the organism and on the presence or absence of oxygen.     Glycolysis can occur both in presence and absence of oxygen. Pyruvate is formed during both aerobic and anaerobic glycolysis.

    Explanation:

    Although pyruvate is the end product of glycolysis in both aerobic and anaerobic condition but the energy expenditure of glycolysis in case of both aerobic and anaerobic conditions are different.

    In case of aerobic condition 7 molecules ATP are formed among them 4 ATP are generated by substrate level phosphorylation and 3 ATP molecules are generated by oxidative phosphorylation.

    On the other hand 2 molecules of ATP are consumed to the net gain of ATP during aerobic glycolysis is 7-2=5

    In case of anaerobic glycolysis 4 molecules of ATP are generated and 2 molecules of ATP are consumed. So the net gain of ATP molecules in Anaerobic glycolysis is 4-2=2
