when silicon dioxide combines with carbon in the following reaction, it is only 95.2% efficient. what mass of silicon carbide will form when 5.75g of silicon dioxide reacts?

    mas of silicon dioxide = ?

    efficiency = 95.2%

    balanced chemical equation

    SiO₂ + 3C → SiC + 2CO

    The mole ration of SiO2 and SiC = 1 : 1

    First we will find out number of moles of SiO₂ and SiC

    As we know that:

    number of moles = mass / molar mass

    number of moles of SiO₂ = 5.75 / 60.08

    number of moles of SiO₂ = 0.096 mol

    As the mole ration of SiO₂ and SiC = 1 : 1

    so number of moles of SiC = 0.096 / 1

    number of moles of SiC = 0.096

    Now we find the mass of SiC

    mass of SiC = moles * molar mass

    mass of SiC = 0.096 mol * 40.11 g/mol

    mass of SiC = 3.85 g

    3.85 g SiC will produse when there is 100% effeciency

    when the reaction is 95.2 % efficient mass of SiC will be:

    mass of SiC at 95.2 % efficiency = (3.85 / 100) * 95.2

    mass of SiC at 95.2 % efficiency = 0.0385 * 95.2

    mass of SiC at 95.2 % efficiency = 3.67 g
