A chemist dissolves 660. mg of pure hydroiodic acid in enough water to make up 300. mL of solution. Calculate the pH of the solution.

    Explanation:

    Mass = 600mg, Volume = 300ml

    To get the number of mole of HCl

    n = mass/molar mass = 600/36.5 = 18.02 mole

    Now to he the concentration of HCl

    C = n / v

    = 18.02/300

    = 0.603mol/ml

    But pH = - log [hydrogen ion]

    Therefore pH = - log 0.603

    =0.23
