There are various ways in which animals bring food and energy into one group of experiences. Some species may create their own food and others will consume other creatures to get their calories.

A consumer or heterotroph is considered an individual that will get its nutrients by eating (consuming) other species. Although the sciences have many fascinating words, one of the great things is that many are based on Latin or Greek roots.

For example, since you learn that in Greek "hetero" mean "other" and "troph" mean food, heterotrophs use food, for example, to feed food to heterotrophic species.

They use the control and then energy and materials in that food to grow, reproduce and carry out all of their life activities. All animals, all fungi, and some kinds of bacteria are heterotrophs and consumers.
