A reaction was performed in which 3.8 g of cyclohexanol was reacted with an acid catalyst to obtain 2.7 g of cyclohexene. Calculate the theoretical yield for this reaction.

    Solution:

    The Balance Chemical Equation is as follow,

    C₆H₁₂O + Catalyst → C₆H₁₀ + H₂O + Catalyst

    Where;

    C₆H₁₂O = Cyclohexanol

    C₆H₁₀ = Cyclohexene

    Calculating Theoretical Yield:

    According to equation,

    100.16 g (1 mol) of C₆H₁₂O produces = 82.15 g (1 mol) of C₆H₁₀

    So,

    3.8 g of C₆H₁₂O will produce = X g of C₆H₁₀

    Solving for X,

    X = (3.8 g * 82.15 g) : 100.16 g

    X = 3.11 g of C₆H₁₀

    Theoretical Yield = 3.11 g

    Calculating %age Yield:

    As,

    %age Yield = Actual Yield : Theoretical Yield * 100

    So,

    %age Yield = 2.7 g : 3.11 g * 100

    %age Yield = 86.81 %
