A semipermeable membrane separates two aqueous solutions at 20 °C. For each of the following cases, name the solution into which a net flow of water (if any) will occur. Assume 100% dissociation for electrolytes.

Solution A: 0.10M Al (NO3) 3 Solution B: 0.20M NaNO3 Solution A: 0.10M CaCl2 Solution B: 0.50M CaCl2 Solution A: 0.1M NaCl Solution B: 0.1M KBr Which group has a net flow towards solution A, net flow solution towards solution B, and no net flow?

    The first step is to multiply the molarity with the amount of ions in each formula.

    For the first pair = (0.1 M) (4) = 0.4 M and (0.2 M) (2) = O. 4 M - > There is no net flow.

    For the second pair = Since both are the same type of solution, solution A which has a lower concentration will flow to solution B which has a higher concentration.

    For the third pair, (0.1 M) (2) = 0.2 M and (0.1 M) (2) = O. 2 M. There is no net flow since KBr and NaCL both have 2 ions.
