The first law of thermodynamics states that △E = Q - W. How is this also a statement of the principle of conservation of energy?

    Energy is not created nor destroyed, it is only transferred between forms such as heat (q) and work (w). any energy that doesn't go toward the work of the system is "lost" as heat
