C The speaker has a love-hate relationship with America, but ultimately has lost faith in the country.

Throughout the text, the speaker says how he both loves and hates America. For example, the speaker says, "Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, / And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth, / Stealing my breath of life, I will confess / I love this cultured hell that tests my youth," (Lines 1-4). Here the speaker is stating how America is like a tiger killing him. However, he says that he loves "this cultured hell". The contradiction of describing America as hell and the strong emotion of love supports that conclusion that the speaker has a love-hate relationship with America.
