    Question:

Analyze Look at the list at the beginning of the essay (lines 1-14 of Joyce Carol Oates, "Against Nature"). In what way does it contribute to the structure of the author's argument?

    Answer:

The author in the opening of the essay uses lines 1-14 to build a foundation for her argument against nature as perceived by people generally. People usually perceive nature as something beautiful, something to be appreciated, protected, and preserved.

Joyce takes the leftist position with the lines that specifically indicate how negative nature is.

For example, in line 5, she states that Nature is accidental, lacks resonance, and even it's horror does not provide any real excitement.

    Cheers!
