Montag is probably feeling a bit relieved, as this has thrown off his tracks for the time being. The people in this book demanded instant gratification, as their attention spans have been completely destroyed. Also, they needed to put the citizens' minds at ease so they could continue the search, and admitting they could not catch Montag would make the government look bad and incapable, and would decrease the peoples' trust in them. That is why they pretended another man was Montag, and killed him instead.
