How do Herr and Caputo combine observations and literary devices to tell a story?

Both Caputo and Herr were writers of the Vietnamese war. And the way they combined observations and literary devices is seen by the experiences they lived while on war. Many different experiences were building the structure for stories. The idea was to communicate the war experience and how soldiers lived
