Domestication is a process that takes centuries within an animal species. Dogs and cats have been bred as pets for thousands of years. You can't simply love the wild out of an animal. Another reason is that they don't stay "little" forever. For example, a cheetah is cute when it's a baby, but eventually it grows up and becomes large, which can make it harder to take care of.
