Waverly "Meimei" Jong was a renowned chess prodigy and she thought highly of her individual achievement. With such pride and possible arrogance, this spurted conflict between Waverly and her mother. Waverly resented her mother's bragging which later made her mother think that Waverly was ashamed of their family and race. Their conflict grew worse until Waverly furiously ran away from home.

Thus, it was Waverly "Meimei" Jong motivation that propelled the rising action of the story.
