How do the danish warriors protect themselves and how does this affect the atmosphere of herot?

The Danish warriors did not fight, as their way of protecting themselves and the Herot against Grendel not like the Beowulf who courageously battled. Because of the Grendel’s reign terror the result was a twelve-year emptiness of Herot at night.
