Even though I haven't read the story, based on textual clues in these sentences I would say the correct answer is C. "The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, the lids of it set with small diamonds."

The reason why is that you can't really have a watch lined with diamonds unless you've worked really hard to get it. This man has hustled his whole life and in the end, he has done well for himself in life, which is evident by his expensive watch.
