David's depiction of a broader view of the Alps gives the impression of the vast rugged terrain that Napoleon must traverse to obtain glory. Delaroche's depiction of Napoleon gives a much narrower and snow capped view of the mountain terrain. This enhances the effect of describing the slog of war.
