    Relative dating is used to identify what things existed before or after another. This is usually seen in fossils in which layers of new fossils are laid on top of each other.

    Absolute dating uses scientific techniques to identify the actual date of when a fossil or animal existed

    Filling in the gaps of absolute dating with that of relative dating, these methods made the geologic time scale.
