Why didn't the leaders of the aopt opt to Simply revise or improve the American the Articles of Confederation in 1787

The states kept growing and the way the were run proved to be bad for the Articles and the articles had to be revised to take into consideration these new problems such as slavery or the power of the federal government or the ever increasing population and territorial size and things like that. In the end they drafted a completely new document to fix this.
