Originally japan controlled the unified state of Korea. Korea was divided into two after WW2 as they fell under two different spheres of influence with the soviet union controlling one side and the united states occupying the other. after much tension and turmoil the Korean war broke out in 1950-1953. the war finally ended after an armistice was signed. though an armistice was signed and the fighting is over. the war is not, therefore both Koreas are still at war. so far they've been at war for 67 years.
