Why did European contries explore

Shortly after Columbus returned, other Europeans realized he had not reached the Indies. They began to think of the Americas as a "New World." They fought against each other and against the Turkish Empire. These wars were very expensive, so they needed to find lots of gold, silver and precious stones to pay for them.
