The Ottoman conquest of the Byzantine empire encouraged exploration due the violence of the war itself. Byzantine people sought to flee the violence by heading westward across the Mediterranean or by land into modern-day Europe. A great many influential people trekked westward including philosophers, scientists, laborers, and entrepreneurs. The influx of Byzantine citizens into Greece and greater Europe is thought to have triggered the Renaissance era.
