Major General George H. Thomas defeated General John B. Hood at Nashville, Tennessee. Hood moved towards Nashville with a 30,000 strong army. In part, Hood had hoped to draw William Tecumseh Sherman away from his devastating southward campaign towards Atlanta, Georgia. Perhaps reinvigorating his campaign, Hood had previously defeated General Schofeld's troops on the way to Nashville, but was nonetheless, defeated due to reinforcements and his own troops weariness and fatigue.
