    The answer is Vladimir the Great, leader of present-day western Russia during the late 900s and early 1000s, sent envoys to study the major religions of the world.

    His envoys were the most impressed with Constantinople and Christianity, which ended up having a big effect on Vladimir (he converted), and consequently Russia in the centuries to come.
