Before the development of agriculture, humans were hunter gatherers. They had no permanent dwelling areas and would move with the animals or prey they hunted. Approximately 12, 000 years ago, humans started to practice agriculture and this eliminated the need for them to move to find food. Agriculture therefore led to the birth and development of civilizations as people settled in one area and fed off the land.
