    The commercial revolution began in the 11th century and ended in the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. It is marked by growth in trade that is conducted by lengthy sea voyages. Therefore, it showed the importance of shipbuilding techniques. Building better ships meant producing better merchant ships and navy ships to guard against piracy. The British excelled in this field and therefore enabled them to build the largest empire in history.
