New ways had to be found in order to ensure maximum profit and to ensure safety of products. That's why countries started focusing on exploration and switched to the new age from the medieval period since it was necessary for them to try and avoid Arab and Muslim traders who controlled the path to East. This turned the trade towards sea voyages instead of caravans.
