A) what paradox was there concerning atolls? describe darwin's proposal: was this proposal confirmed or disproved?

I presume the paradox concerning atolls was how did they form or what they were anchored in and where was the island that they should surround. In fact Darwin correctly discovered or theorized that they rested on partly submerged rims of old submarine volcanoes that had subsided and this has been confirmed by modern investigations.
