    Frederick Winslow Taylor, one of the pioneers of industrial engineering, attempted to improve the efficiency of workers in the steel plant near Bethlehem, PA. He dealt with processes as basic as how to best pick up and move a lump of iron, and what shape of shovel was best for different tasks. The Bethlehem Steel Company only adopted some of his ideas, and eventually they parted company.
