Why did the Constitution for the Republic of Texas legalize slavery and outlaw the settlement of Free African Americans?

    slavery made legal by the Constitution of the Republic of Texas. The General Provisions of the Constitution forbade any slave owner from freeing his slaves without the approval of Congress and forbade Congress from making any law that restricted the slave trade or emancipated slaves.
