Connected it to slave family dynamics--due to the break up of slave families, women became the caretaker of children as men were taken away from partners and children.

Marriage was not allowed in most states under American slave law. Consequently, family systems were not recognized and men and women were broken apart and to be sold to differing slave work. Men were removed from raising children and social scientists suggested this has been continued even after slavery ending.
