There are two reasons why the Second Continental Congress chose George Washington to command the Continental Army. These reasons are polical and military. The military reason was George Washington had military experience. He was involved in the highest levels during the war between the colonialists and the French and Indians. He was, therefore, seen as the most suitable leader among the other leaders at the time.

The political reason is during that time, people saw themselves as citizens of their specific colonies. Therefore, there was need to choose a leader who would unify all of them. Because political leaders were from Massachusetts and Washington was from Virginia, it was best to choose him instead of the other leaders.
