In 1947, President Truman took action against the Communist threats in Greece and Turkey in the first example of what would later come to be known as the "Truman Doctrine". Rather than sending U. S. military assets to directly fight and aid these countries in the fight against Communism, Truman instead pledged financial support, sending $400 million in aid to these two countries.
