The Articles of Confederation gave the states most of the authority in government and gave the federal government very little power. The branch that had the most power was the legislative branch, the law-making body of government, since the Articles did not establish 3 separate branches (or system of checks and balances). The frames of the Articles did this because they feared that the federal government would get too powerful and oppressive, like the British monarch.
