Why did the public debt go up significantly from 1812 to 1815?

    One of the main reasons financing the war proved difficult and costly for the United States is that few preparations had been made prior to a declaration of a war in June of 1812. Another factor was the dissolution of the national bank, the charter for which expired in 1811.
