The North was upset because it declared the Missouri Compromise of 1820 to be illegal. Prior to this the goal of abolitionists and anti-slavery sentiments was that if they couldn't completely ban slavery then they would contain it. The goal was to keep it from spreading as the nation grew. With the ruling by the Supreme Court that the Missouri Compromise was illegal then that opened vast amounts of land up to continue the institution of slavery.
