    British Prime Minister Robert Walpole inaugurated the policy of salutary neglect. It consisted in the relaxation of policies corcening trade and regulations for the American Colonies. This allowed the American Colonies to prosper, and also, to develop forms of self-government.

    The colonies became used to this high level of political independence, and one of the main motives of the American Revolutionary War was the removal of this policy. The colonies simply could not tolerate a strong oversight from Britain, they were not used to it.
