Many of the challenges of diversity was that many immigrants, African-Americans and poor white people lived in the inner city. There was a big difference between rich and poor and a middle class hasn't been completely developed yet. There were many ethnic enclaves, or ethnically different neighborhoods, during the time. This was because industrialization was booming and many immigrants were settling for low wages. All in all, the real challenge of diversity was big gap between rich and poor. It was really hard to make money and do good if you were stuck doing factory work.
