    Answer: They had better generals and knowledge of the terrain

    Explanation: The beginning of the Civil War was marked above all else with the incompetence of Union generals. The Southern generals were much more tactically astute than their Northern counterparts which gave Southern soldiers an edge in terms of warfare. They also had a much better knowledge of the terrain as they were fighting close to their homes.
