The "Mexican-American War" started with a dispute between Mexico and the United States over Texas. Under President James Polk, Texas was then admitted into the union and this caused a tension regarding the borders between Mexico and the U. S. Boundary adjustments were sought but it failed, thus leading to the war. Mexico then fell during the war thus, they negotiated with the U. S. through the "Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo."

The treaty resulted into the United States gaining new territories and key ports from Mexico. It also gave up its claim on Texas and recognized the Rio Grande as a southern border for the American territory. Mexico was then paid $15 million. Since the U. S. gained new territories, this significantly increased the U. S. population.
