    The general reaction was of astonishment and admiration around the world, because it was an extraordinary tecnological and scientific achievement, "a giant step for mankind," as the pope put it. In the US, people felt proud of being American. Let's remember there was a Cold War and competition with the Soviets also had space as one of its battlefields, there was a space race between the two superpowers.
