Why did slavery grow faster in the lower south than in Virginia?

    The South has a longer growing season than Virginia.

    Explanation:

    Therefore more farms and plantations, which required a lot of field hands (obviously this was before mechanized tractors etc.) Being a house slave was a better position than being a field hand, as the individual got better clothing & the workwas less physically demanding.
