In 1857-1859, Indian military units serving with the British army, fought in an uprising against English colonial rule, the Raj. The historical event is called the Indian Mutiny or the Sepoy Rebellion. The British crushed the revolt by the end of 1858. So, the event was a defeat for Indians. The uprising's reason was the cultural insensitivity of British officers, they had no respect for Hindu and Muslim religious or cultural traditions.
