Did the United States nester world war 1 to make the world a safe democracy or to protect American economic interests

On April, 2,1917 Wilson went before a special joint session of congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany stating: "the world must be safe for democracy." On April 4, the senate voted 86 to 6 to declare the war.
