How did the United States contribute to the rise of Muslim extremist leaders

in Afghanistan in the late 20th century?

    During the Cold War, there were many proxy wars and the war in Afghanistan was one of them. The two parties fighting within the country were either supported by the U. S. or Soviet Union. As a result, the U. S. provided weapons to the jihadists against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan who were supported by the Soviet Union. Later, Muslim extremists got a hold of these weapons and terrorist groups formed.
