Ben Franklin is referred to as the symbol of enlightment. This was an era of free thinkers, where people sought after understanding and using science rather than religion to explain natural phenomena. The idea of religious freedom was also becoming more and more popular. So, in this era people did not hesitate to explore, question and investigate doctrines and traditions that they didn't approve of.
