Joshua Drake felt satisfied even if there was a law limiting working hours for children as he still preferred fewer wages rather than no wages at all. He expressed that he would rather have fewer wages and less work. He would not send his children to work if the work is not based on necessity.

    Explanation:

Joshua Drake said that he sent his children to work due to necessities and also stated that "necessity compels a man to send his children to work". He basically wanted to run the family through stability in financial income and thus he preferred moderate labour and lower wages. No parish assistance was received by him. when asked how he would get himself into employment he said he would find more employment at the machines where the work was regular, divided and spread amongst people at large. He does not suppose that they (children) would get the same wages if the hours limiting law was passed, but at the same time he would rather have it, and he believed that it would bring him into employ and also said "if I lost 5d. a day from my children's work and I got half-a-crown myself" and that would be better for him.
