The Dred Scott decision happened after a slave had gone to a free state with his owner. After, he decided to sue his owner becuase he believed that technically he was a free person since they had gone into a free state. The court ruled that Dred Scott could not be free, because slaves were property and not people. It ruled that slaves were not citizens and could not have sue without having rights. The reaction was different in 2 ways. Slave owners were okay with this. They saw no issue. Northerners were upset, as were slaves.
