How did courts once interpret the equal protection clause to rule in favor of laws that segregated

    In the South there was a rule of separate but equal. Separate but equal ended up not being equal for the African American population. So the courts used the equal protection clause to stop segregation.

    They claimed that the laws treated both groups equally because neither could use facilities designated for the other group
