Why did South Carolina resort to nullification over the tariff controversy of the early 1830s? What deeper sectional and political issues were exposed by the nullification crisis?

    The core issue here was the power of states to follow and establish their own taxes versus the power of the federal government and Congress to do it. South Carolina politician John C. Calhoun led the opposition to federal imposition of taxes in 1828 and 1832, arguing the states were entitled to block the application of a federal law.
