Why was the French settlement of Quebec originally founded

    On the Gaspé Peninsula the French explorer Jacques Cartier on June 24 1534 took possession of the territory in the name of French King François I. It was Cartier who established the first French settlement on American soil, Charlesbourg Royal. The colonization was difficult and slow because they had to deal with harsh weather.
